Nightshift

Underground Motorculture in Japan

Japan has its fair share of traffic and vehicle safety rules, at the same time it is the place for one of the most creative tuning and racing scene in the world.

Beyond the edge of legality a thriving tuning scene meets up at night to showcase their often bizarre creations on parking lots along the coastal city highways of Tokyo or Osaka. Its here where the urban rich in their Lambos and Ferraris line up right next to the rural Bosozoku motorcycle gangs, who play the Japanese Anthem with the raw acoustic force of their tuned engines. Its here where you see 70's Toyota Sedans clad out in neon with 3 Meter long exhaust pipes pointing into the night sky. Its here where little countryside girls cower in the dim light of coffee vending machines while their boyfriends start the family vans 100.000 Watt Audio System. The police does their job of party pooping without much success, their sirens unheard, their cars unseen in this weekly spectacle of escaping monotony.

It's a dying culture and over the years i've spend many nights admiring those spectacles, the crazy modifications, the drift races, the air full of exhaust fumes and those guys and girls who seem to be the only true rebels left in this country.
